An Introduction to Taekwondo

Taekwondo is an ancient Korean martial art that dates back over two thousand years. It made its Olympic debut in Sydney in 2000. This  was previously featured in demonstration sports at the 1992 and 1988 Olympics. It was only recently, however, that taekwondo made an Olympic mma Kealba debut on a fully-fledged basis.

Moo Duk

Kwan Moo Duk Kwan is a traditional martial art from Korea. It was created in the early 20th century. Although it is controversial, its early origins laid the foundation for Taekwondo.  The Korean Taekwondo Association grew rapidly in size and influence and eventually absorbed members of Moo Duk Kwan. Moo Duk Kwan was founded in 1945 by Grandmaster Hwang Kee, a man who was influenced by ancient Korean fighting techniques. The martial art was originally named Hwa Soo Do, but later shortened to Tang Soo Do and Soo Bahk Do.

The system’s changes made by Hwang Kee led to the modern name Soo Bahk Do. Moo Duk Kwan is a popular way to learn the basics of Taekwondo. Named after the Korean word Moo which in English means “military”, the name derives from this. The “Duk” part stands for “virtue,” and the “Kwan” part means “building.” Moo Duk Kwan has its own logo that features the name in hanja. Taekwondo is a martial art with an emphasis on leg techniques and kicking. Its main purpose is not only to develop physical prowess, but also morality.

The first president of the Kukkiwon was Un Yong Kim. On November 15, 2001, he resigned. Woon Kyu Uhm was elected to succeed him and to lead the Chung Do Kwan as its president. His election was unanimously ratified by the Board of Directors of the United States Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation, Inc., and by other chapters around the world. Moo Duk Kwan is a world-famous martial art that has influenced many other styles and influenced many other disciplines.

Many practitioners of the art can trace their roots back to Hwang Kee’s original school. He incorporated many Chinese fighting techniques into his martial arts system. Lee returned to Korea in 1944, and began teaching martial arts to Koreans. His kwan was in Seoul’s Suh Dae Moon Gu. His kwan became the most prestigious school in the city. He was taken prisoner and held captive during the Korean War. His family never heard from him again. In the 1960s

Dr. Ken Min

was an associate professor at Eastern Montana College, Billings, MT. He took on the task to translate Grandmaster Lee’s original book. Black Belt Magazine published a summary on Chuungdokwan and Master Al Cole posted articles taken from Korean magazines. The Moo Duk Kwan branch of Tang Soo Do is the most popular form of Taekwondo today. Both branches of the organization teach Moo Duk Kwan.

In 1965, the various Kwans of the modern Korean martial arts were merging to form Taekwondo. However, the founder of Ji Do Kwan, Kee, Hwang, opposed this merger. He wanted to keep control over his organization. Hong, Chong Soo and Im, Young Tek split off later and formed Moo Duk Kwan. This branch eventually became the most well-known in Taekwondo. Hwang Kee was influenced greatly by Okinawan Karate, and Hwa Soo Do. Hwa Soo Do, Tang Soo Do and Moo Duk Kwan were his styles of Taekwondo.

In 1947, he began teaching it. The aim of Taekwondo training is to bring the student into a harmonious state of mind and spirit, and to make them strong. In addition to physical strength, Taekwondo is a form of self-defense, a way to protect yourself. The history and culture of Korea are the origins of Taekwondo. The Koreans experienced a cultural revival after World War II. The result of this revitalization was the modern Korean martial arts we know today. Yoon established YMCA Kwon Bup bu and Chang Moo Kwan after the Korean War. Yoon had more than 500 students at that time. His training methods were strict and severe.  The World Taekwondo Federation, (WTF), is the governing body for the sport and represents it at international competitions.  It is the most well-known martial art style in the entire world.
